Glacier by season

Winter Poor

Deep snow. Only the lower ends of the park are reachable, for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing near Lake McDonald.

Spring Poor

Plows clear the Going-to-the-Sun Road through May and June. Bike the closed road before it opens to cars.

Summer Prime

The short main season. The Going-to-the-Sun Road usually opens fully in late June or early July, and wildflowers peak in July. Wildfire smoke is possible in August.

Fall Fair

September is superb: fewer people, larches and aspens turning, and the road open until mid-October.

Local tip

Many Glacier is the best area for grizzlies, moose and bighorn sheep. Go early in the morning for both wildlife and parking.

Glacier's Going-to-the-Sun Road is a 50-mile engineering landmark that crosses the Continental Divide at Logan Pass.
