Mount Rainier by season

Winter Fair

Paradise gets enormous snowfall and becomes a snowshoe and sledding destination. The road from Longmire to Paradise is the only route kept open, and it can close in storms.

Spring Fair

Snow still covers Paradise and Sunrise. Lower forests around Longmire and Carbon River are quiet and green, and roads open gradually through late spring.

Summer Good

Prime time. Sunrise Road opens in early July, trails melt out, and subalpine wildflowers usually peak from late July to mid-August.

Fall Good

Huckleberry and mountain ash turn the meadows red and gold in late September. Weather turns quickly in October, and Sunrise Road closes for the season.

What to do

  • Walk the Skyline Trail at Paradise
  • Watch sunrise at Sunrise (6,400 ft, the highest point you can drive to)
  • Hike to Tolmie Peak Lookout
  • See the Grove of the Patriarchs
  • Catch reflections at Reflection Lakes
Local tip

Clouds hide the mountain on many days. Check the Paradise webcam before you drive up, and go on a weekday in August for the best mix of flowers and space.
