North Cascades by season

Winter Poor

The North Cascades Highway (State Route 20) closes over the passes, usually from November to April or May. The park's interior is effectively off-limits except to experienced ski-mountaineers.

Spring Poor

The highway reopens in late spring once plows clear avalanche debris. Valleys green up, but high trails stay snowbound into July.

Summer Prime

The best and busiest time, though 'busy' here is quiet by national park standards. Trails clear in July and Diablo Lake glows turquoise from glacial flour.

Fall Good

Late September into early October brings golden larches along the highway near Washington Pass and Maple Pass, just outside the park boundary.

What to do

  • Stop at the Diablo Lake Overlook
  • Hike Cascade Pass Trail
  • Walk Thunder Knob for lake views
  • See the golden larches at Maple Pass Loop (late Sept)
  • Boat to Stehekin on Lake Chelan
Local tip

Most visitors see the park from State Route 20. For the real backcountry, hike Cascade Pass or take the boat up Lake Chelan to Stehekin.
