Carlsbad Caverns by season

Winter Good

Underground, it's 56°F year-round, so the cave is always comfortable. Above ground it's quiet and mild.

Spring Good

The bats return to the cave in April and May, and the evening bat flight programs start.

Summer Prime

Prime time for the sunset bat flight, when hundreds of thousands of Brazilian free-tailed bats spiral out of the cave mouth.

Fall Prime

Bat flights continue into October before the colony migrates to Mexico. The desert above is pleasant.

Local tip

Walk in via the Natural Entrance (about a 1.25-mile steep descent) and ride the elevator out. It's the best way to grasp the scale.
