White Sands by season

Winter Good

Cool, clear and calm, the best time for hikes across the dunes. Occasional snow on white sand is surreal.

Spring Prime

Pleasant, but often very windy, with blowing sand.

Summer Fair

Hot, but the gypsum stays cooler underfoot than ordinary sand. Go at sunrise or sunset, and watch for monsoon storms.

Fall Good

Excellent. Mild weather and the best sunsets, plus monthly full-moon programs.

Local tip

Waxed plastic snow saucers work best for sledding. Pick a steep dune face without vegetation at the bottom.
