Summer National Parks Without the Crowds

Summer is peak season almost everywhere. These parks are at their best in summer but stay manageable.

Gates of the Arctic

Alaska · Best Jul–Aug

The visitor season: river trips and backpacking under the midnight sun. Mosquitoes peak in July.

Lake Clark

Alaska · Best Jun–Aug

Bear viewing at Chinitna Bay and Silver Salmon Creek, plus fishing and paddling.

Wrangell–St. Elias

Alaska · Best Jun–Aug

Prime time for Kennecott tours, glacier hikes and flightseeing.

North Cascades

Washington · Best Jul–Sep

The best and busiest time, though 'busy' here is quiet by national park standards. Trails clear in July and Diablo Lake glows turquoise from glacial flour.

Isle Royale

Michigan · Best Jul–Sep

The main season for backpacking and paddling. Lake Superior keeps temperatures cool.

Katmai

Alaska · Best Jul, Sep

July is the peak at Brooks Falls, when bears gather to catch leaping sockeye salmon. It's also the busiest time.
