Best time to visit · Arizona
A mile deep and 277 miles long. Nothing prepares you for the first look.
The best time to visit Grand Canyon National Park is April–May and October. For great conditions with fewer people, aim for October. It's busiest in April through September.
Snow on the South Rim and almost no crowds. The North Rim is closed. Inner-canyon hiking is pleasant if you have traction for icy upper trails.
Excellent rim weather and good inner-canyon conditions. Spring break brings crowds.
The rims are warm and crowded, but the inner canyon is deadly hot, often over 110°F at Phantom Ranch. Monsoon storms build in the afternoons.
Arguably the best time. Clear skies, cooler hiking, and yellow aspens on the North Rim in early October when it's open.
Going down is optional; coming back up is mandatory. Plan on twice as long for the climb out as for the hike down.
Grand Canyon is 277 river miles long and about a mile deep.
Before you go: The North Rim is seasonal (normally mid-May to mid-October). Its lodge and many facilities were destroyed by the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire, so check current North Rim status before planning a visit. Check current conditions on nps.gov.
