What to expect

Honest take: July is not the month for Grand Canyon. The rims are warm and crowded, but the inner canyon is deadly hot, often over 110°F at Phantom Ranch. Monsoon storms build in the afternoons.

Local tip

Going down is optional; coming back up is mandatory. Plan on twice as long for the climb out as for the hike down.

Good to know

  • Best months overall: Apr–May, Oct.
  • Closest airport: Phoenix (PHX), about 3.5 hours; Flagstaff (FLG), about 1.5 hours.
  • Before you go: The North Rim is seasonal (normally mid-May to mid-October). Its lodge and many facilities were destroyed by the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire, so check current North Rim status before planning a visit. Check current conditions on nps.gov.
