Channel Islands by season

Winter Fair

Gray whales migrate past from December to April. Seas can be rough and boats are sometimes cancelled.

Spring Good

The islands turn green, and giant coreopsis blooms bright yellow. Winds can be strong.

Summer Prime

Calmer seas and warmer water make summer the best time for kayaking and snorkeling, and blue and humpback whales feed offshore.

Fall Good

September and October often have the clearest water and calmest days of the year, which makes this a great time to kayak the sea caves.

What to do

  • Kayak the sea caves at Scorpion Anchorage
  • Hike to Potato Harbor on Santa Cruz Island
  • Spot the endemic island fox
  • Watch whales from the boat crossing
  • Camp on Anacapa or Santa Rosa
Local tip

Book the boat (Island Packers, from Ventura or Oxnard) early, and bring everything, including water. There's nothing for sale on the islands.

Good to know

The Channel Islands are home to about 145 species found nowhere else on Earth, including the island fox.

Before you go: Boat crossings depend on weather and can be cancelled on short notice. Check current conditions on nps.gov.
