Great Sand Dunes by season

Winter Fair

Snow on the dunes is spectacular and you'll be nearly alone. Cold, but sunny.

Spring Good

Medano Creek flows at the base of the dunes, usually peaking from late May to early June. It's a family favorite for splashing.

Summer Good

The sand surface can reach 150°F on summer afternoons. Hike the dunes at dawn or dusk.

Fall Good

Calm, crisp and golden, with aspens turning in the mountains above.

Local tip

Wear shoes on the dunes in summer; the sand can burn bare feet. Start dune hikes by 9 a.m.
