Canyonlands by season

Winter Fair

Cold, quiet and stark. Snow occasionally dusts Island in the Sky, and some 4x4 roads become impassable.

Spring Prime

Great hiking weather in the Needles district. Rafting season on Cataract Canyon begins.

Summer Fair

Very hot in the canyons. Island in the Sky, at 6,000 feet, is more bearable for overlooks.

Fall Good

Superb. Clear days for overlooks, good backpacking in the Needles, and White Rim permits are in demand.

What to do

  • Watch sunrise through Mesa Arch
  • Look out from Grand View Point
  • Hike Chesler Park in the Needles
  • Drive or bike the White Rim Road (permit)
  • Raft Cataract Canyon
Local tip

Island in the Sky pairs easily with Arches (40 minutes away). The Needles is a separate 90-minute drive, so budget a separate day.

Good to know

Canyonlands is divided into four districts by the Colorado and Green rivers, and the districts don't connect by road inside the park.

Before you go: Backcountry and White Rim trips require permits that often sell out for spring and fall. Check current conditions on nps.gov.
